Originally coming from the Western suburbs of Brisbane, I have always been acutely aware that finer dining establishments are few and far between on that side of town. This always resulted in many treks into the city and many $90 taxi fares home back in the day.
Now however, a brand new restaurant has opened on this side of town which offers great food, a great selection of wine and a cheaper cab ride home (unless you’re from the East side). Pig’s Ear Wine and Grill can be found on the third level of the newly revamped Indooroopilly Shopping Centre. Does it bring home the bacon? Let’s find out.
When I gear up for a degustation dinner, I usually anticipate a restaurant with white linen tablecloths, minimalist furnishings, bright lights and modern streamlined tableware. And bread. Waiters walking around with lots of bread.
A degustation at Deer Duck Bistro however turns all of that on its head (apart from the bread). With funky furnishings, antique cutlery, an assortment of china plates and a deer head on the wall you know you’re in for a unique experience as soon as you set foot in the door. As Deer Duck Bistro was just this week awarded a chef's hat in the 2016 Good Food Guide, my already high expectations for this unique restaurant did jump up a notch. So what is the food like within these quirky quarters? Let’s find out.
Let's face it- there's a time for healthy eating and there's a time when only comfort food will do. If you're out in Fortitude Valley late on a Friday night, chances are you're not hankering for an acai bowl.
This is where new restaurant Lucky Egg steps in. Located at the relatively new live music venue, The Brightside, Lucky Egg serves up free range, locally sourced fried chicken to keep those midnight munchies away. Let's have a sticky beak at the new menu.
If you live in Brisbane's Western suburbs, chances are you’ve driven past Caffe Primavera on more than one occasion. That’s because it turns sweet sixteen this year and is still going strong.
In an area where restaurants come and like the traffic on Oxley Rd, this is no mean feat. So why do the locals love it? Let’s take a look.
There seem to be a lot of cafes and restaurants opening up in Brisbane lately that specalise in doughnuts or deep fried chicken on waffles. Don't get me wrong- I love that stuff, but eating it every day is not terribly sustainable if you want to fit into your pants next week.
Thankfully, there's another new kid on the scene that will help to keep your body on the right track- Pineapple Express Cafe. This superfood cafe has docked at Hamilton's Portside and has offerings packed full of acai, goji berries and coconut meat/ water/ flakes. But how good does all of this healthy food taste? Let's find out.
Mexican food is all the rage at the moment with its delicious blend of spice, beans, and tequila thrown into the mix.
We had a bit of a craving when we were cruising around Brisbane’s West-side and decided to try out the relatively new Chidos Mexican Grill at Graceville. Let’s taco ‘bout how we fared.
Kawana Island may not be the first place you think of in Aus when on the hunt for some good Italian food, but perhaps it should be.
It's here you can find BV Pizzeria and Wine Bar, which serves up Italian meals that would do Melbourne's Lygon St proud. While it's little-known by outsiders, it remains a local favourite. Let's find out why.
In a rare Tour De France-inspired moment on Sunday morning, my friend and I hopped on our bikes and peddled around Southbank, West End and Dutton Park. It's basically the same as Fougères, Mûr-de-Bretagne and Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
Given that it has been 10 years since I last did any such peddling, we grew pretty hungry pretty quickly. We stopped off at West End's Atomica cafe, which again I hadn't been to for years but I remember eating some good noms there in the past. How has it stood the test of time? Let's find out.
Even though it’s technically just over an hour away from Brisbane, Montville in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland feels like a whole other world away, with its rolling green hills, autumn trees and not a traffic jam or brown river in sight.
One of the best ways to make the most of the idyllic nature up here is to find a place that serves up something amazing to eat, and the highly awarded restaurant at Spicers Clovelly Estate is just the place for this. The Long Apron was recently crowned with two Chef Hats in the 2014 and 2015 Queensland Good Food Guide, two chefs hats in the 2015 Australian Good Food and Travel Guide Chef Hat awards and is ranked in the Top 100 Restaurants in Australia by Gourmet Traveller. Basically, it specialises in noms. |
