​Being a food-lover does mean that I'm not too shabby in the kitchen. I'm not exactly creating croquembouches every fortnight, but I can churn out the basics quite nicely.

Whether you're the executive chef at home or more in charge of the sponge and scourer, there's always room to learn something new in the kitchen. That's exactly what you can do at The Golden Pig Cooking School in Brisbane's Newstead. 

What's the benefit of actually going to a cooking class instead just rifling through "Woman's Weekly Easy Dinners"? Read on to find out. 

Monday night dinners for me often consist of a smaller portion of the previous Sunday night's dinner. Not last night though. Rather than a poorly re-heated slightly congealed pasta, we attended a Clonakilla wine event at one of Brisbane's most exciting restaurants: Urbane.

For anyone who hasn't tried a drop of the Clon, it's not your usual big Aussie wine style, and that's what makes it really interesting. From the Canberra region, Clonakilla wines pack a lot of different ripe fruit and floral tastes into most of its bottles, but with a lot of finesse as well. It's less Dame Edna, more Princess Mary.

Every wine we had last night had some sort of soft, floral notes on the nose which really took my mind to the countryside, as did the food we were served up.

That second Sunday in May is almost upon us again, which means florists and chocolate truffle-makers are working in overtime getting ready for a stream of Mother's Day orders that's sure to come their way.

Often as a special treat for mum, you'll see people out and about at breakfasts, brunches and lunches all throughout Sunday, but this year could be a chance to do a little something different that supports local business and still gives mum a day out that she'll love- take her out to your local market!
