Mexican food is all the rage at the moment with its delicious blend of spice, beans, and tequila thrown into the mix.

In a rare Tour De France-inspired moment on Sunday morning, my friend and I hopped on our bikes and peddled around Southbank, West End and Dutton Park. It's basically the same as Fougères, Mûr-de-Bretagne and Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne.
Given that it has been 10 years since I last did any such peddling, we grew pretty hungry pretty quickly. We stopped off at West End's Atomica cafe, which again I hadn't been to for years but I remember eating some good noms there in the past. How has it stood the test of time? Let's find out. Being a food-lover, I'm quite happy pottering around in the kitchen, but what I struggle with sometimes is deciding what to make for dinner tonight. When I stop and think of how many hours a week I put into that question, I seriously should put that down as a part-time job. So when the opportunity came around to try out a new Brisbane meal-kit delivery service, I jumped at it. I was probably most excited about someone else thinking about what I should make for dinner more than anything else. Tastebox delivers fresh ingredients complete with recipes to your door so all you have to do is read, chop and stir. What kind of meals can you expect from Tastebox? Let's find out.
While it has only been a mere five months since I last wrote about Shouk Cafe, I cannot get enough of the food at this place and decided it was time for an update (read: any excuse to eat here).
The dishes at this Paddington cafe all have a touch of Middle Eastern flair about them, which makes for both interesting and delicious eating. I love anywhere that has smashed baklava as a regular meal accompaniment. So what Autumn/Winter delights are on offer at Shouk? Let's find out.
You don't always expect to find eating establishments in the middle of suburbia, but when you do it's often a good sign that it can survive as a stand-alone business in between a bunch of houses.
Tucked away down a suburban street in the Ashgrove/ Bardon area is this hidden gem of a cafe: Famished On Frasers. We stopped in for breakfast after walking up Mt Coot-tha one Sunday morning. Needless to say we were famished (and on Fraser Rd) so we took finding a cafe with this in its name as a good sign.
With so many great cafes in Brisbane, serial brunchers have never had it so good as we do now. It does mean though, that it has become harder and harder for a restaurant to stand out.
One place that has made a name for itself on the awkward hours dining scene, is this little gem of a cafe in Paddington: Shouk Cafe. With an all day breakfast menu as well as vast lunch and dinner menus, Shouk has every hour of your day covered for anytime you get a Mediterranean craving.
I've had a go at cooking for special diets such as vegan and paleo, and while I can whip up a pumpkin salad ok, I'm not so strong on avocado mousse cakes.
I can make them, but they're not always terribly tasty. This is where I take my proverbial hat off to a new cafe in Paddington, Brisbane: The Funky Monkey Cafe. The peeps at Funky Monkey don't see cooking for special diets as a challenge, but rather they see it as a fun gastronomic experience. And they do it well.
I have a confession to make. Before I ate at Mu'ooz I didn't know exactly where Eritrea was located within Africa.
To save anyone else in my situation from opening Google Maps right now, it borders Sudan and Ethiopia and is across the Red Sea from Yemen. It is also home to a cracking good slow-cooked stew. The name Mu’ooz, means “tasty and healthy” in Tigrinya, which is the language of Eritrea. If ever there was a restaurant that lived up to its name, this is probably it.
Brisbane's West End has long attracted anyone on the hunt for awesome food on a budget. It really was high time then that I reviewed one of the best 4101 restaurants that ticks these two boxes: Little Greek Taverna.
Right on the pointy corner of Browning St and Melbourne St, this restaurant involves a lot of sidewalk eating. I've been coming here quite a bit, and I actually can't ever remember eating inside. Which is good because that would hinder my ability to people-watch, and West End is one of the best places in Brisbane for that!
When I think of Spring, I think of fresh grass, flowers in bloom, pastel coloured skies and I also think about excel spreadsheets for some reason. Not sure about that one.
Anyway, a brand new restaurant in Brisbane has released a brand new Spring menu based on fresh local produce, and they have plated up the blossoming meadows and rolling green hills of this season beautifully. |
