Moorooka may be the go-to suburb to buy a second-hand car, but it’s also becoming the place to find quality brunches thanks to a burgeoning café scene in the winding streets behind the “magic mile”.
One such café to have popped up is Todd and Pup. As the cute name suggests, dogs are welcome here. So are Todds.
This family friendly café also extends its bear hug to kids, so is already a winner in the minds of local families.
For those of us though on the other side of town who aren’t in the market for a new SUV, is it worth the drive to this café? Let’s find out.

Stepping into Todd and Pup takes you into a world of black and whites with a touch of Scandi-inspired natural woods. A smattering of indoor plants makes this dining area a chic and lovely place to be.
For those with small ones (both the two-legged and four-legged variety), astroturfed outdoor seating is available, complete with a kids toy box and dog water bowls.

The all-day menu at Todd and Pup makes for a pretty exciting read. Options include Cookies & Cream Buttermilk Waffles, Coffee Rubbed Ribs, and a Mac & Cheese Chimmi Changa.
After much deliberation, I opted for the G&T Salmon Benedict, with gin cured salmon, poached eggs, cucumber, lime hollandaise, rye bread and finger limes.
The vivid colours in this dish just exploded against the neutrality of the restaurant, making the serving up of my meal an artistic event in itself.
Everything about this dish was spot-on. The salmon had a lovely succulent mouthfeel and beautiful subtle flavours. The slight tang of the finger lime and the lime in the hollandaise sauce also enhanced the interest-factor of this dish. The addition of the cucumber to the salmon eggs benny was an inspired touch, really lifting what can otherwise be a bit of a stodgy dish.
Fresh baked goods are on offer here too with some gigantic lemon and strawberry muffins lining the counter alongside an assortment of croissants and danishes.

The drinks menu at Todd and Pup is equally as noteworthy as the food menu. Freakshakes are on offer which meant I just had to get my freak on and order one.
The Salted Caramel Pretzel shake came with a Mt Everest serve of whipped cream and some crunchy salted pretzels on top. It will be very hard to go back to a bog standard caramel milkshake after this.
Coffees here are courtesy of Genovese Coffee, and there’s also a delicious-sounding Malabar Chai Pot, served with hot milk and honey.

Southsiders are lucky to have Todd and Pup on their doorstep. For those of us who regularly shop at Chermside though, is it worth the drive to the other side of town?
For amazing quality food, inventive dishes, artistic drinks, and a place all the family can enjoy, yes. Yes it is.
And you can grab a bargain on a hatchback while you’re out here too.
