I have four words for you: Ricotta Blueberry Breakfast Dumplings.
When I heard these were on offer at our local Nordic-inspired café, I was there faster than you can say blåbær.
Lokal + Co at West End offers a very innovative menu which puts the old plate of bacon and eggs to shame. But does this creativity translate into deliciousness?

The first thing you notice about Lokal + Co is not the airy Scandinavian-inspired décor, or the freshly-baked pastries that line the counter (these are the second and third things you notice). Rather, it’s the sheer “Brisbaneness” of this restaurant which is situated in a refurbed Queenslander, in a street full of other Queenslanders.
The latest breakfast menu at Lokal + Co promises a lot. We ended up choosing three dishes between two people because we’re gluttons. I mean, because everything sounded so amazing.
First up, we tried Lokal + Co’s Nola (Grain Free Granola) with Mandarin, Ruby Grapefruit and Coconut Yoghurt.
This was a bowl of crunchy goodness with toasted nuts, coconut and seeds all coming together in a beautiful medley. The coconut yoghurt was fluffy and creamy at the same time, giving a nice textural contrast to the granola. Fresh fruits lifted each mouthful perfectly as well.
We then tucked into the main reason for why we were here in the first place- breakfast dumplings. The Ricotta and Blueberry Dumplings, came with a Spiced Strawberry Syrup, Coconut and Nut Crumble.
These were unique, ingenious and downright delicious. Soft, fluffy clouds of ricotta with bits of blueberry were encased in a lightly fried, crispy dumpling shell. I only wish we’d gotten 6 instead of 4 on our plate because they were so good!
To even-out our plethora of sweet dishes, we also ordered the Sweet Potato Waffle, Spiced Chorizo, Hung Sour Cream, Avocado and Heirloom Tomatoes.
I definitely had a Jerry Maguire moment with this dish- “you had me at sweet potato waffle”. This meal had such a nice mix of flavours, that each forkful of food ended up being a party in your mouth. The waffles were light and airy with sweet potato swirled through. The chorizo was excellent quality, and the sour cream was decadently creamy.

Coffee at Lokal is supplied by Allpress and tea is courtesy of the West End Tea Co. Both make for very satisfying morning wake-up calls.
If you’re in the mood for an early bird party, a range of Morning Cocktails are available. These include a Cinnamon Pear Mimosa and a Lychee Mimosa. If my two-year-old hadn’t kept me awake since midnight the night before, I would have had one in each hand.

We came for the breakfast dumplings and we stayed for so much more at Lokal + Co.
I’ve no doubt we’ll be back again, given all of the other creative dishes we missed out on, despite our best efforts at ordering multiple meals for two people. Lokal may well become our Saturday morning local.
