I don't like grumbling about Brisbane, but there is one thing that often gets brought up and I find myself nodding in agreement- if you want a late dinner, everywhere seems closed.
This is where the enduring restaurant Jimmy's on the Mall comes in, and also why it's lasted the test of time in Brisbane city when so many other restaurants haven't.
Jimmy's is open 24/7.

Seeing as it's been on the scene since 1982, Jimmy's On The Mall did go through a period of having an ageing exterior for awhile there. A recent spruce-up though has completely transformed this restaurant into something fun, modern and just generally a nice place to be.
Being a place that’s open at 4am, it needs to cater to a lot of cravings, and that’s one thing Jimmy’s does really well- offer you a whole lot of variety.
We attended another fabulously organised Eat Brisbane event here to sample a range of offerings from Jimmy’s kitchen.
To kick off, we were treated to:
I love a bit of ceviche and plating up scallops and crab is a solid and satisfying seafood combo.
While the slow braised octopus and chorizo were delicious, I absolutely loved the little dollops of preserved lemon and the pimentos, which were char-grilled perfectly. They were still sweet with just a small amount of heat in them, making them easy to scoff whole.

We were then served up:
If you love anything to do with mushrooms, these arancini have your name on them. The blend of mushrooms in the arancini balls were lifted by a hint of truffle and a mushroom power-kick from the porcini puree. I could have eaten the puree by the bowl-full!
The pork ribs were sweet and sticky and all things delicious. The crunchy peanuts on top were a really nice touch. This would be a great side (albeit a slightly mess one) to a few after work drinks at Jimmy’s.
- Mushroom and Truffle Arancini: with Porcini Puree, Parmesan, Basil Oil
- Caramelised Twice Cooked Pork Ribs: with Sticky Black Pepper Sauce

Lastly we had:
Who can go past a confit potato? I certainly can’t, and it’s such a good way to spice up the usual side of chips you normally get with fish.
I loved how the sweet and sour pork was made with pork fillet so you knew exactly what you were eating. There were a lot of tastes going on in the sweet and sour sauce which was deliciously decadent. Fellow foodie @de_palate picked out the curry leaves in the sauce, which was a great call. I knew I was tasting something a bit different in it but couldn’t quite put my finger on it.

Brisbane actually does have something for everyone at all hours of the night; it's just a matter of knowing where to go.
