One reason I love pottering around at food markets on the weekend is to see what new, tasty concoctions have been created by clever local gourmets.
Sadly I don’t always make it to the markets though, particularly in winter when it’s a toss-up between a warm bed or an early morning forage in the elements.
This is where a brand new foodie service comes in.
FlavourCrate is the brainchild of Masterchef contestant Ben Macdonald, who has been working with Australian producers to collect a bunch of gourmet treats which can then be delivered to your door.
What kid of flavours do you get in a crate? Let’s find out.

FlavourCrate considers itself a food discovery service more so than a food delivery service, and wants to expand your experience of local gourmet foods on offer.
Each month, FlavourCrate sends out a selection of ingredients and snacks so that you and I can both try out new products, and still get our weekend sleep-in.
Ben will also thrown in one of his coveted recipes to help you figure out what to do with your new found produce.
Our very first FlavourCrate was choc-full of interesting things that made me feel like a kid at Christmas when I opened it up. I may have started humming "Deck the Halls". Don't judge me.

Contents included:
- My Granola Gourmet Granola
- Angelos Roasted Pumpkin Pappardelle
- Organic Iced Tea, Apple Lemongrass and Ginger
- Yarra Valley Tea Co. Lemongrass Organic Tea
- GG Gourmet Smoked Chipolte Almonds
- Segreti North African Harissa
- Splendid Blends Memphis Ribs Spice Blend
I’ve been loving the granola in particular every morning, and have appreciated the tip of warming it up in the microwave, or leaving to soak overnight for a bowl of bircher.
The Yarra Valley Tea Co. Lemongrass Tea has also been a bit of a lifesaver during the cooler mornings. This refreshing blend has been a nice change from my usual cups of peppermint tea, and not something I would have otherwise thought to buy myself.

FlavourCrates can be placed as a standing monthly order, or as an individual order. You can also opt to have a crate delivered to someone else as a gift.
You can pay by the month for $49 per month, or signing up for three months will shave the price a bit at $46 per month. If you do subscribe, you can skip a month at any time, and you can also cancel easily online.
It will be lots of fun trying out all of the other items over the next month, and I’m particularly keen to test out my new recipe of bacon and pine nut pumpkin pappardelle with crispy sage.
Keep an eye out on Instagram for my final Masterchef result!
