Banneton Bakery Woolloongabba Ashgrove Cafe Brisbane Review
Having a good local bakery is like owning a Chris Hemsworth movie on DVD- great to have nearby for when you need a quick pick-me-up.

One of Brisbane’s bakery institutions is Banneton Bakery, which can be found in various parts of town, including the Kelvin Grove Markets, Boggo Road Markets, and at its two shops in Ashgrove and Woolloongabba.

Check out what happened when we succumbed to some temptations of the baked-good kind.

While Banneton is known for its wood fire breads and brand fruit loafs, the Ashgrove and Woolloongabba shops also have various cakes, hot foods and coffee for a full café experience.

In need of a bite to eat while we were Southside, we headed over to the Woolloongabba shop for some tasty treats and loved the happy decorations that were going on here.

After spending quite a while trying to figure out what crispy golden delight to order, we settled on:

  • Pumpkin, Artichoke and Feta Quiche
  • Gruyere and Vegetable Pastie

The quiche was beautiful with a flaky pastry on the bottom and loads of pumpkin and artichoke.

While I loved the gruyere cheese in the pastie, the only vegetables inside were peas and corn- some random carrot would not have gone astray in this one.

Seeing as we were at a bakery, we couldn’t leave without some sweets:

  • Cherry and Pistachio Danish
  • Fruit, Nut and Chocolate Meringue

Both of these were very, very moreish. The sour taste of the cherry in the danish contrasted against the sweet pastry nicely, so you didn’t feel like you were getting a massive sugar overload with this. I loved the use of pistachios as well.

Meringues are one of those things I tend to fail with in the kitchen, so I always take the opportunity to gorge myself when someone else makes them. The addition of dark chocolate bits added a touch of decadence to the light meringue, and the fruit and nuts provided some great flavours as well.

While it’s known for its great bread-making, Banneton is more than your usual bakery thanks to is lovely dine-in café option as well.
It’s like the bonus of getting a Liam Hemsworth trailer with your Chris Hemsworth movie.
