Life is uncertain- eat dessert first.

Last weekend we woke up and thought, 'where better to have a spot of breakfast than at a place that only serves dessert?' So off we went to Cowch Dessert and Cocktail Bar. No we didn't have cocktails for breakfast, but yes we did have dessert.

His tutti-fruitti lemon meringue pie and various sized muffin tins have stocked Brisbane supermarket shelves for awhile now, but finally Jamie has one-upped himself on the Brisbane foodie scene.
We reached Jamie's Italian, Brisbane with high expectations, particularly after seeing the range of supermarket Christmas peppercorns he pulled out this year.
If you're a meat and potatoes kind of person, I would advise that Gerard's Bistro isn't for you. If however you like a bit of pizazz and creativity on your plate, this quirky laneway bistro is pure food theatre.
Getting through the menu options at Gerard's Bistro takes a bit of time. Not just because there are a plethora of dishes to choose from, but because each dish is so unique that putting all of the individual items together in your mind really takes some heavy thinking.
I have a confession to make. Before I ate at Mu'ooz I didn't know exactly where Eritrea was located within Africa.
To save anyone else in my situation from opening Google Maps right now, it borders Sudan and Ethiopia and is across the Red Sea from Yemen. It is also home to a cracking good slow-cooked stew. The name Mu’ooz, means “tasty and healthy” in Tigrinya, which is the language of Eritrea. If ever there was a restaurant that lived up to its name, this is probably it.
I have long been a fan of fusion-style food which often satisfies two foodie cravings with just the one bite. You do have to get the combination of two foods right though- there’s a reason no one lines up to order a sardine croissant.
The newest bar/restaurant on the Brisbane scene definitely gets the mix right, with a spectacular array of pretzel burgers on its menu.
Monday night dinners for me often consist of a smaller portion of the previous Sunday night's dinner. Not last night though. Rather than a poorly re-heated slightly congealed pasta, we attended a Clonakilla wine event at one of Brisbane's most exciting restaurants: Urbane.
For anyone who hasn't tried a drop of the Clon, it's not your usual big Aussie wine style, and that's what makes it really interesting. From the Canberra region, Clonakilla wines pack a lot of different ripe fruit and floral tastes into most of its bottles, but with a lot of finesse as well. It's less Dame Edna, more Princess Mary. Every wine we had last night had some sort of soft, floral notes on the nose which really took my mind to the countryside, as did the food we were served up.
Brisbane's West End has long attracted anyone on the hunt for awesome food on a budget. It really was high time then that I reviewed one of the best 4101 restaurants that ticks these two boxes: Little Greek Taverna.
Right on the pointy corner of Browning St and Melbourne St, this restaurant involves a lot of sidewalk eating. I've been coming here quite a bit, and I actually can't ever remember eating inside. Which is good because that would hinder my ability to people-watch, and West End is one of the best places in Brisbane for that!
Some of you may be thinking, "Pane e Vino... that sounds familiar," and you would be for good reason. This dependable restaurant has been on the corner of Albert and Charlotte Streets in Brisbane City for 20 years now. In a competitive market, that not just a good sign, it's a stellar one.
I'll be honest, the last time I ate at Pane e Vino was I was 18 and probably had "the Rachel" haircut. I'd had one Guinness too many at Gilhooley's Irish Pub next door, so needed some carbs stat. Luckily, Pane e Vino has a policy of staying open based on demand, and I remember being very grateful of the bowl of fresh pasta that was placed in front of me at some strange hour.
When I think of Spring, I think of fresh grass, flowers in bloom, pastel coloured skies and I also think about excel spreadsheets for some reason. Not sure about that one.
Anyway, a brand new restaurant in Brisbane has released a brand new Spring menu based on fresh local produce, and they have plated up the blossoming meadows and rolling green hills of this season beautifully.
After a few almost balmy days recently, it may feel like the worst of Winter is over. But that would be a bit sad seeing as we only really got to crank up the oven and cook up some hearty meals for just a few weeks this year.
Luckily Vintaged Bar and Grill at the Hilton in Brisbane City has decided now is the time to release its new Winter menu, and they've got some great blends of all-season foods with a warming kick to them. I was fortunate enough to try out a few new menu gems and promise that there's no way you can leave here unsatisfied. |
