So I've been a bit on a Heathcote-kick lately as you may be able to tell from this review riding the coattails of the Heathcote Estate Single Vineyard Shiraz review a few weeks ago. But there's a reason for this- Heathcote produces some stellar shiraz bottles.
Situated just north of Melbourne, Heathcote is marked by ancient Cambrian earth, which is a rich, volcanic soil. This is what makes the area renowned for its shiraz grapes.

The Tatiarra vineyard is made up of 143 hectares of this Cambrian soil. Tatiarra has 4 tiers of wines, and the grapes that go into Culled Barrel Shiraz are deemed to not meet the quality of their second-tier Cambrian shiraz. So you can pick this up for $20 a bottle, and is awesome value for any shiraz-lovers out there, especially on a good vintage.
The 2007 Culled Barrel Shiraz poured a dark ruby red colour, full of promise for juicy ripe fruits on the palate. The nose consisted of aniseed and ripe plum and was just a delight to inhale. Peppery and spicy on the palate which underpinned over-ripe blackberries made this a fantastic drop with dinner.
This was really a fantastic wine at a brilliant price, and is a great step towards Tatiarra's higher tiered labels, the Caravan of Dreams and Cambrian Shiraz.
