Heathcote as a region is one area in Australia where you can really pick a distinct terroir, particularly in any shiraz that's produced here.

I've had a few bottles of shiraz from this region, and one thing I always pick is a lovely flintiness that comes through. The Heathcote Estate 2010 Shiraz is no exception.

Pouring a deep almost purple colour, you know you're in for a ripe fruit taste sensation when you initially swirl the glass around. On the nose are ripe blueberries and plums, which overlays a rich earthy scent as well.

Tasting this wine, there was that fresh earthy flavour I really associate with this region which has a fantastic mineral aspect to it. I also found a subtle star anise, and ripe cherry and plum on the palate. Tannins weren't overpowering but structured well into the wine, making this vintage a keeper for quite a few years yet.

This is a full-bodied wine
that you do need to sit on a bit to unravel the complexities in your glass.
