The Burrow in Brisbane’s West End has set up tables that meander through an old Queenslander house, resulting in a quirky, artsy restaurant.
Let’s hop to the review, shall we?
I mentioned the layout of this place is quirky, and The Burrow has embraced this characteristic wholeheartedly by hiding its menus inside children’s books, which is awesome. At first I wasn’t sure why were were given ‘Magical Spot What’ upon sitting at our table, but the light soon dawned that rather than spend a few hours here looking for the red bow-tie, we were meant to make a dinner selection from here.
- Bad Mutherfungi: Forest Mushrooms, Crispy Pancetta, Gorgonzola, Mozzarella, Rocket and Parmesan
- Goatface Killah: Pesto base, Sage Roasted Potatoes, Artichoke Hearts, Confit Garlic, Spinach, Mozzarella, Goats Cheese Mornay and Fresh Herbs
These guys weren’t kidding when they said crispy pancetta on the Bad Mutherfungi- it added a great texture contrast to the rest of the pizza. I loved the generous amounts of mushroom on this and the hint of gorgonzola to make it a bit special.
The Goatface Killah was a fantastically unique vegetarian option. Where else can you get a delicious goats cheese mornay as a pizza topping?
- Pakoras: Crispy Fried Onion and Eggplant Fritter with a Tangy Tamarind Sauce
- The Poutine (Burrow style take on the Montreal classic): Crispy Beer Battered Chips tossed in Blue Cheese Sauce, Pink and Green Peppercorns, finished with Bacon Lardons, Parsley Tips, and a side of Gravy
The pakoras were incredibly tasty, though the tamarind sauce ended up being a bit on the sweet side, particularly with the sweet onions in the little golden balls of goodness.
I loved the poutine here with the fresh peppercorns adding a really nice kick. The blue cheese sauce on this wasn’t overpowering, but added a rich depth that you don’t usually associate with chips.
Great food and drinks, a creative atmosphere and very accommodating staff makes The Burrow a great pick for big-group eating.
I could rabbit on and on about this place but I’ll paws here so you don’t go hopping mad at me.
