Yeronga back then was a nice enough suburb, but didn’t really have much in the way of urban development, so even though I was wrong, I didn’t really want to go there.
That’s all changed now, with cafes and restaurants popping up in the leafy area, turning it into a bit of a destination point for Brisbanites- whether they’re right or not.
One new venture is Seven South, just a hop skip and a jump away from Hyde Road Park.
It is worth heading out west for? Let’s find out.
They’ve teamed up with Head Chef Sam Potter, previously from e’cco Bistro, meaning you know you’re in for some fancy food, even though you’re out in the ‘burbs.
We stopped in for lunch, kicking off with a couple of fruit crushes which were much needed on a stinking hot day. We opted for the Watermelon and Raspberry Crush and the Pineapple and Coconut Water Crush. Both were insanely refreshing with a nice amount of fruit-foam on top to keep us entertained while we waited for our food.
The wait wasn’t long at all before my Duck Salad with Confit Duck Leg, Grapes, Orange, Parsley and Fennel emerged from the kitchen. This salad was just sensational in terms of both tasty food and gorgeous presentation.
The duck was cooked so well it just fell off the bone, and the confit-style of cooking ensured every mouthful of duck meat was moist and tender. The slight saltiness of the duck contrasted perfectly with the bed of fruits, tart radicchio and fragrant fennel it was served on.
This dish was an absolute winner as well, with the salmon smoked so well you didn’t end up with any kind of overly fishy aftertaste in your mouth afterwards.
Husband called these “the best fish cakes he’s ever had”, and he’s not one to shy away from a fish-potato combo whenever it’s presented to him in life.
Seven South also has a fully-stocked dessert cabinet for your raiding pleasure. After much deliberation, we opted for the Chocolate, Blueberry and Almond Tart which came with a healthy dose of lightly whipped cream on the side.
This cake looked dense, but was as light as a west-side feather. It was also wonderfully moist thanks to the generous amount of ground almonds used in it. The blueberries added a really nice sweet punch to the well-balanced amount of chocolate used.
Seven South is at 1/ 92 Hyde Rd, Yeronga. For those of you with a four-legged friend, there’s dog-friendly seating outside and a dog park across the road. See, even your dog wants to go to Yeronga now.
