Bourke Street Bakery Sydney Surry Hills Review
I confess I haven’t eaten at every bakery in Australia, but from the high-gluten experience I do have, there is one bakery that is my absolute number one.

The Bourke Street Bakery
is an institution for good reason- it makes absolutely phenomenal baked-goods. I find I gravitate towards it whenever I’m in Sydney, even if it means catching three different forms of public transport to get there.

What’s so good about this place? Let’s check it out.

When it's cold and gusty outside, all you really want is a nice warm pie. Luckily, this is where the Bourke Street Bakery excels.

Below we went for:

  • Beef Brisket, Red Wine & Mushroom Pie
  • Pork & Fennel Sausage Roll
  • Beef, Beer & Bacon Pie with Cheesy Mash

The filling in each of these was packed full of flavour in perfect pastry parcels. I particularly have a soft spot for the pork and fennel sausage roll which has an abundance of fennel seeds to give it a slight aniseed taste.

The beef brisket used in the beef and red wine pie just melted in your mouth,
and you could really taste the beer in the beef and beer pie.

Even though we'd eaten a number of pies and sausage rolls, we couldn't go past the sweet treats with these bad boys on offer:

  • Ginger Brulee Tart
  • Lemon Curd Tart

The brulee tart is something everyone should try at least once in their life. The custard is packed with ginger and oozes out at first bite. The topping is crunchy and the pastry is flaky, meaning you have a bonanza of textures happening in this delicious little package.

The lemon curd tart is a delight as well, packed full of zingy lemon tastes which nicely offsets the curd's rich and creamy texture.

The Bourke Street Bakery isn't just known for its baked goods, it also has some pre-made iced drinks on offer that tend to fly out the door. Below we had:

  • Iced Chai
  • Iced Coffee

The iced chai was an absolute winner, made from milk, sugar, black tea, cardamon , cinnamon and cloves. It was aromatic and well balanced- I could have downed a liter of this stuff.

Being a bread-based shop, the Bourke Street Bakery also has a range of breads on offer including Rye & Caraway Sourdough, Fennel, Raisin & Cherry Sourdough, Chorizo, Thyme & Caramelised Onion Roll and Brioche Loaf.

If you have a sweet spot for baked goods, make sure the Bourke Street Bakery is on your to-do list. It's definitely something you kneed to check out in Sydney-town.

These are my all-time favourite pies and roll. I'm lucky I work close to a branch :)
